When Domestika approached me about doing a ‘how to’ comics course my immediate thought was “Yes! But… let’s not just do a ‘how to’. Let’s do something slightly different. Something that helps you go the extra mile, and signals the difference in a creative approach from a thinking point of view, that would be useful not just to aspiring comic artists, but to ANY artists, amateur, or professional, and even to writers.”
Their response was - “Cool. But what does that even look like?”
So I proposed ‘world-building’ as the general theme, but it is so much more than that, because what it’s really about is expanding your horizons, and thinking bigger and deeper about what you are doing, and more importantly, why you are doing it.
At the heart of it is a very important lesson I learned from my mentor and dear friend, the late, great Sir Don Lawrence. I won’t spoil it for you here, but I dubbed it ‘The Corridor’, and it literally changed EVERYTHING about the way I produce and think about my art.
Ultimately, what the course encourages creators to do is to think about the world your story is set in with clear, wide-open eyes. It helps you go deeper, and push further when it comes to the mechanics, the materials, and specifically the details that can give your creation extra authenticity. It provides the tools to help you go a step further than the competition. But it’s also just a fun time, where you’ll get asked to unleash some creativity in unexpected ways!
I’m really proud of this course, and I sincerely hope you find it inspiring and useful, whether you are a beginner, hobbyist or professional!
Enjoy!
I genuinely enjoy this course! I've made a handful of comics issues in my years and yet this taught me a new and efficient workflow. There's philosophy and theory but a stack of practical tips that translate to solid lessons all the way through. It's great to hear your mind work through the problem solving on all levels. I've said that making comics is like "mental Legos" and that can be frustrating. Hearing the way you construct stories into visual narrative takes the edge off of the labor. Then the practical application of art making from inks to Photoshop helps create visual depth quickly. I just keep babbling but basically saying it's a wholly worthwhile course!
What a great idea!
